Building New with Character

We are honored to have been chosen to spearhead the design and build of Cottages & Bungalows // American Farmhouse next Project House—a cute and cozy cottage nestled in the fast-growing suburban community of Taylor, Texas.

"We aimed for a cottage feel that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding 1950s neighborhood," Melissa says. "The white brick facade and arched doorway add a touch of timeless character, creating a space that feels both cozy and elevated."

This rendering of Melissa and Brent's vision for the Project House was a collaboration between us and Plank and Pillow.

We can't wait to share more behind the scenes of the 2024-25 Cottages & Bungalows Project House with you!

Project House Floor Plan

Melissa and Brent carefully crafted a floor plan that serves both form and function. The shared living areas of the living room, kitchen and breakfast nook all flow together in an open plan. They decided to tuck the mudroom and laundry room near the back entrance for functionality.

Two guest bedrooms with a shared bath sit at the front of the home, while the spacious primary suite resides in the back for added privacy. The garage is thoughtfully hidden and accessible through the back alley.

Living Room Design Plan

We love to create an Al design of the space to help visualize the room. Next we space plan using the floor plan, then source the materials and furnishings.

Soft neutrals and warm tones form the foundation of a serene and inviting ambiance, creating a cozy retreat within the home. Gentle lighting plays across plush textiles, while calming natural elements weave a sense of tranquility.

Thoughtfully crafted and infused with the essence of family values, it becomes a space

"collected" over time. Here, refinement and comfort find perfect harmony, fostering relaxation and connection in equal measure.

Guest Bathroom Design Plan

The guest bathroom design plan combines rich, luxurious elements with a soothing neutral palette. A dark green vanity serves as the focal point, its deep hue offering a bold contrast to the smooth marble countertops that provide a touch of elegance. The walls will be painted in a soft, neutral cream, creating a warm and inviting backdrop that balances the striking vanity. Brass fixtures add a sophisticated, vintage-inspired charm, complementing the neutral stone and marble checkered floors, which introduce a subtle pattern and texture to the space. Linen fabrics, used in the shower curtain and window treatments, bring in a soft, organic feel, completing the design with a touch of understated luxury.

Pantry Design Plan

Nearly an 8-foot by 8-foot cube, the Project House Austin pantry is an open concept with a walkway dividing it from the breakfast nook and it is tucked away behind the kitchen wall. “Since this is a small cottage house, we had to get creative with defining spaces,” Melissa says. Even with a compact layout, the pantry is more spacious than many found in a typical cottage home, and every bit of it is carefully planned to make the best use of storage space. “We maximized the use of the 9-foot ceilings and created storage drawers below, and we lined two walls with upper shelves featuring a ladder that can move to either side and provide easy access to higher shelves,” Melissa says.

Partnering with Putnam Ladder, she opted for a white oak and brass ladder that beautifully brings together functionality and style. “The quality and detailing are amazing, and it will really elevate the pantry,” she says.
